Long Distance Love
Alisher and Dildora are in love in Osh, Kyrgyzstan. Soon they are married and even sooner they have a baby on the way. At just 18, the smitten couple had considered only romance, but now Alisher finds himself struggling to provide for his young family in the harsh economic climate of Osh. The only option left for Alisher, like so many of his generation, is to leave his new bride to try to make it big in Moscow. While the earnest love between the newlyweds has a sweetness stronger than their 3,500 mile divide, their relationship is now beset by challenges more dire than distance alone.

In Uzbekistan, the government has started its own war on terror. A war that – like so many others – is waged for political reasons, which rarely have anything to do with reality. As a result, thousands of Muslims are imprisoned on false charges of conspiring to commit terrorist crimes. One of them is the human rights activist Dilya's brother Iskandar, who has been imprisoned in the notorious Jaslyk prison in a barren desert since 2002 – an inhumane place of which there are no images. Today, she lives in exile in Sweden because of the threats and harassment, but Dilya continues to fight the case of her brother and other prisoners with the help of Amnesty International.

The film is devoted to Azimjon Askarov, an ethnic Uzbek, artist and Kyrgyz human rights defender, who had investigated and documented crimes of Kyrgyz law enforcement agencies. In 2010 during interethnic conflicts in the South of Kyrgyzstan (the city of Osh), Askarov was arrested and sentenced to life in prison. In 2020 Askarov died in prison under unclear circumstances. Askarov’s family and friends are trying to restore justice to him.
